New Approaches to Reducing Flood Risk
Research on flood risk management has been undertaken in a number of diverse contexts (developed state, developing state, transboundary) using a new generation of sophisticated data collection, analysis and modeling tools. This presentation examines the problem of hydrological transformation from both engineering and policy perspectives, and presents a new approach to managing flood risk based on several case studies.
Richard A. Matthew, PhD (Princeton) is a Professor of Planning, Policy and Design and Political Science; Director of the Blum Center for Poverty Alleviation; Director of the Center for Unconventional Security Affairs; and co-Principal Investigator of the FloodRISE Project, all at the University of California at Irvine. He is also a Senior Fellow at the International Institute for Sustainable Development, and a member of the United Nations Expert Group on Environment, Conflict and Peacebuilding. He has served on several United Nations humanitarian missions, including two he led in Sierra Leone. He has over 170 publications, including 12 books.
