Sextortion – A Hindrance for Women and Development

Venue: SIWI, Linnégatan 87A, Stockholm

Venue Url

Sextortion is when “sex, rather than money, is the currency of a bribe”. This event wants to shed light upon this highly gendered issue.

ABOUT THE SEMINAR

The word “sextortion” was first used by the International Association of Women Judges (IAWJ) in 2009, in an attempt to raise awareness of this phenomenon and “address a pervasive, but often hidden, form of corruption that degrades its victims and undermines social institutions around the world”. The legal provisions to address sextortion are yet to be identified: the different institutional and legal frameworks vary from country to country. This makes it difficult for victims of sextortion to file a report; there is no guarantee that they will be protected, and they risk having to face not just a chain of legal obstacles but also a full range of social stigma.

How to deal with sextortion in the provision of services is yet not clear, and there is a debate among practitioners, some looking at the phenomenon through the gender-violence lenses, others from the corruption angle. This event will be dedicated to discussing different angles to tackle the problem, having the views from practitioners from the gender-violence field, others from the anti-corruption one, presenting their challenges but also opportunities, so we can allow for cross-learning and all together put sextortion to an end.

This is also the theme of Musikhjälpen, which you can read more about here.
