Understanding the Forest-Water Nexus: monitoring framework and tool
Forests play a crucial role in the hydrological cycle, regulating water availability and quality, as well as reducing water-related risks such as landslides, local floods and droughts. Forested watersheds supply 75% of the worlds accessible freshwater for human and ecological needs. This special session will highlight the need to mainstream an integrated approach to forest and water resources management and policy. The occasion provides an opportunity to preview of a forest-water monitoring framework that is under development.
The session features experts who will provide an overview of forests and water, including gaps in knowledge, why we need science-based policies and practice and why the forest-water topic is important and relevant to the 2030 Agenda; as well as discuss the monitoring tool development process, including lessons learned.
Participants are invited to engage in a participatory workshop to discuss the benefits of such a framework and how best to implement it.
