WWW 2018 – Opening Plenary

For the generations to come to enjoy the benefits of land-based ecosystems and for the preservation of diverse forms of life on land, global efforts are crucial. Preservation and sustainable use of ecosystems will allow to build a prosperous and resilient future, notably through water. Safe accessible water and sanitation service are thus indispensable for healthy ecosystems. Besides water playing a vital role in sustainable livelihoods, it also reduces poverty, achieves inclusive growth and social well-being.

The 2018 World Water Week will cover the theme ’Water, Ecosystems and Human Development’, addressing the critical role of water in the functions of ecosystems and highlighting the role of ecosystems into water production, protection and the maintenance of the hydrological cycle.

Officially welcoming participants to the World Water Week, the Opening plenary will set the pace for the whole week. Engaged and inspiring speakers, high level decision makers or renowned persons will successively share the stage to offer their insights throughout different angles. To mention, H.E Amina J. Mohammed, UN Deputy Secretary General and H.E The Pope Francis will express their views on the correlation between Water, Ecosystems for a just and prosperous world. As tradition, Profs Bruce Rittmann and Mark van Loosdrecht, 2018 Stockholm Water Prize Laureates, will share their ground-breaking innovation aimed at protecting and preserving our ecosystems and natural resources.

Finally, the 2018 Opening Plenary will remind each and everyone to which extent the Week can feed into the Global Agendas and addresses the Water and Ecosystems related issues in a systematic way.
