Announcement of 2016 Laureate – highlight of World Water Day
The 2016 Stockholm Water Prize Laureate will be announced by SIWI’s Executive Director, Torgny Holmgren on Tuesday, 22 March (11.00 CET) at the World Water Day celebrations in Geneva, and in Stockholm.
The prize honours women, men and organizations whose work contributes to the conservation and protection of water resources, and to the well-being of the planet and its inhabitants. In 2016, it celebrates its 26th year.
Jens Berggren, SIWI Director for the Prize will announce the Laureate at a parallel World Water Day event in Stockholm organized by SIWI’s Swedish Water House. The event will consist of a series of seminars exploring water and growth, to coincide with the World Water Day theme – Water and Jobs. Swedish Minister for Financial Markets and Consumer Affairs, and Deputy Minister for Finance, Per Bolund will open the event. This event will be held in Swedish. Register here for the event.
The Alliance for Global Water Adaptation (AGWA), an informal network hosted and chaired by SIWI, has been invited to participate in a World Water Day event at the White House. The event will feature panel discussions and invited speakers from the public and private sectors to raise awareness of priority water issues in the United States, and to catalyze ideas and actions to help build a sustainable and secure water future.
Additional emphasis will also be placed on forests this World Water Day. The International Day of Forests (21 March) will this year, focus on the importance of forests to the planet’s freshwater supply. Read more about SIWI’s work with forests and water here.
World Water Day takes place each year to help raise awareness of water-related issues, and inspire action. This year’s theme is Water and Jobs, particularly the power that water and jobs have to transform people’s lives. Learn more about World Water Day.
