Professor Donoso works at the Water Law and Economics Center of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (PUC), where he teaches undergraduate and graduate students on Water Economics and Management and Natural Resource Economics.

He was Dean of the College of Agriculture and Forestry of the Catholic University of Chile between 1998 and 2007. His publications include book chapters such as: Water pricing experiences in Chile, Water Markets in Chile: Are They Meeting Needs? Regulating groundwater use through economic instruments: current practices, challenges and innovative approaches. and academic publications in Environmental Science and Pollution Research, Water Resources Management, Water Policy, Water Science and Technology, and Water Utilities, among others.

Professor Donoso also is a board member of the International Water Resources Association (IWRA). Professor Donoso specialises on water allocation, collective water management, and water use efficiencies. He is also actively involved in research on adaptation to climate change in the water sector.
