SIWI welcomes Barbara Pompili as new chair of OECD Water Governance Initiative

SIWI welcome the new chair of the OECD Water Governance Initiative, Barbara Pompili. We have enjoyed the productive decade of chairmanship from Peer Glas and look forward to continuing under Barbara’s leadership. SIWI is proud to be a founder and steering committee member of the Water Governance Initiative (WGI).

Since its inception in 2013, the WGI has worked as a global multi-stakeholder network of 100+ policymakers and experts from the public, private and civil society sectors, to improve water governance as a means to achieve sustainable development and growth in OECD member and partner countries.

Alejandro Jiménez, SIWI’s director of Water and Sanitation met Barbara and the other members recently. He told us:

We att SIWI believe this is an important initiative as it gathers different stakeholders that bring their collective experience and thinking into this Governance Initiative which helps to underscore the importance of water governance to achieve global goals.

In a press release from the OECD, Barbara highlighted the many opportunites ahead: ”The international water agenda during my mandate (2022-2024) is particularly rich, with the UN Water Conference in 2023 (New York City, US) and the 10th World Water Forum in 2024 (Bali, Indonesia) ahead of us. The OECD WGI has a pivotal role to play to raise the profile of water governance as a key tool to achieve water security for all. ”

SIWI and other members of the WGI will be at COP27 advocating for good water governance as a means to achieve sustainable development.
