Welcome to Stockholm Junior Water Prize 2020!

Right now, students in 29 countries are getting ready to defend their national honour in the international finals of the Stockholm Junior Water Prize. They have all created school projects of exceptional quality that can help solve some of the world’s water problems. Many of the students will probably continue to invent and may even become famous for some mind-blowing innovation.

“I am so impressed by the Stockholm Junior Water Prize finalists! Everyone should get to know their work. It is really cool to be able to take part of so many smart ideas and see how committed our students are to finding solutions that really help people,” says Ania Andersch who is in charge of Stockholm Junior Water Prize at Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI), which organizes the international competition.

To encourage more people to learn about the amazing Stockholm Junior Water Prize projects, Ania and her team came up with a new idea this year – the People’s Choice Award. It gives anyone a chance to check out the different project on WaterTank and then vote for their favourite.

“I hope that all the participants share this information with their friends and families, so that people hear of the Stockholm Junior Water Prize and the People’s Choice Award. It’s really something to be proud of! And some innovations could change the lives of people if they learn about them and start using them,” Ania says.

It is of course not only the new People’s Choice Award that makes the 2020 edition of Stockholm Junior Water Prize a bit different. This year all activities will be digital since the coronavirus outbreak makes it difficult for people to travel. But Ania Andersch is sure that the finalists will still develop their own strong community, where participants make new friends all over the world and learn about new opportunities.

On 18 August, all the finalists will spend a day together on a digital tour of the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. Not only will they learn what it is like to study at the school, they will also participate in a seminar on how to bring sustainable innovations to the market.

A week later, on the 25 August, the awards ceremony will take place at 2pm CET. It will be a festive occasion, with a royal ceremony led by H.R.H Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden. She is official Patron of the Stockholm Junior Water Prize and very knowledgeable about water. The Crown Princess will announce the winning team and present them with the Prize.

The same week everyone with an interest in water can also join WWWeek At Home, a series of sessions on water topics and climate change held between 24 and 28 August 2020.
