I have always questioned why things happened as they did. I do not consider what I do as ‘research’ but rather as satisfying my curiosity to solve a puzzle, with the ultimate answer helping to make the world a better place for the future. My inspiration comes from the beauty, intricacies and balanced equations of nature – an integral part of my life. I am currently studying Advanced Science at the University of Queensland, as an undergraduate degree leading into an MD. I love what I do and am very excited about making our world a safe and happy place for generations to come.
Tell us what the water concern in your country is!Australia's water concern is reducing rainfall in an already dry continent. With a growing population requiring increased food and the change in climate, future water security is a critical problem.
This is what I think is one of the solutions for a sustainable future:A sustainable future depends on changing behaviours of humans to preserve scarce resources. Everyone needs to be educated and informed of the delicate balance between the environment and our future and encouraged to explore and implement change to ensure a future for both.
CRACK for the FUTURE: The use of eggshell waste as a bio-adsorbant of phosphates for water and soil quality
This study looked at potential bio-waste adsorbents to decrease the phosphate run-off into natural waterways from agricultural fertilisers and animal manures. Identifying eggshell waste as an effective adsorbent for phosphate, a mathematical model and website were developed for farmers to calculate cost savings and application rates of eggshell on their soils. This free and accessible tool will be available to help farmers counteract their environmental footprint.
