My name is Arturo Palomino Moreno, a Bachelor\’s student in Spain, engaged in projects aimed at ensuring the sustainable development of population centers and reducing the adverse effects of flooding.
Tell us what the water concern in your country is!It is widely known that Spain faces both water scarcity and extreme flooding, as seen during the 2024 DANA in Valencia.
This is what I think is one of the solutions for a sustainable future:I believe one solution for a sustainable future is studying plants and how they modify the soil structure, increasing the water infiltration. I also developed an app that scans green areas to assess their risk of flooding.

Modification of soil structure by urban vegetation and its application in flood management using GIS and artificial intelligence.
Many cities suffer the consequences of flooding after a large amount of waterfalls in a short period of time. Therefore, this project determines how urbanvegetation modifies soil structure, improving its water infiltration capacity andreducing flood damage, putting Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) into practice. A humidity sensor was built using Arduino and the humidity and waterinfiltration capacity of soils influenced by five tree species and seven different shrubspecies were measured. Analysis of the results obtained shows that areasoccupied by shrubs infiltrate a greater amount of water. In this sense, species suchas rosemary (Salvia rosmarinus) and oleander (Nerium oleander) stand out for thedevelopment of their root system. With this information, an image recognition model was created and trainedusing LearningML, capable of identifying the…
