Defne Topcu

I’m a 17-year-old student at Egå Gymnasium in Denmark with a huge passion for science, especially within the field of water and environmental research. Over the past six months, I have been working ona scientific project that was awarded the Water Prize (Unge Forskeres vandpris) by Grundfos. This achievement qualified me to represent Denmark at the Stockholm Junior Water Prize final.

Tell us what the water concern in your country is!

As the global population grows, so does the pressure on food production and clean water resources. In this project, I investigated whether certain crop species are less prone to absorbing heavy metals from contaminated soil and water. By identifying plants that either do not absorb these metals or store them in non-edible parts, we can explore safer agricultural practices in polluted environments. This knowledge could be vital in supporting public health and food security in areas where clean water for irrigation is not available.
