2025 | Ukraine | Student: Dnipro Scientific Chemical and Environmental Lyceum of the Dnipro City Council

Ihor Chumakov

Greetings! I am Ihor Oleksandrovych Chumakov, born June 21,
2008, in Dnipro, Ukraine. My passion for natural sciences led me to the Dnipro
Scientific Chemical and Environmental Lyceum. In 2023 I started to conduct
researchers and won prizes at JAN, \”Touch of Nature\”, Eco-Techno Regeneron ISEF
Ukraine 2025. Later, I joined a new project with Nataliia Yesipova, and results are
presented here. Thank you!

Tell us what the water concern in your country is!

Since February 24, 2022, Ukraine has been experiencing large-scale military operations that have led to the destruction of infrastructure and significant environmental pollution, including water bodies, with toxic compounds. Heavy metals, including copper, are among the most common toxicants in such water bodies. Studies show that the heavy metals content in water bodies in the Dnipro region has increased several times over the two years of war.

This is what I think is one of the solutions for a sustainable future:

A practical solution to the problem of cleaning water bodies from heavy metal pollution, including copper, is to create constructive wetland from components that can absorb and accumulate heavy metals, followed by their removal from water bodies and utilization of these biocomponents.
