Hello! I am Pierre, a 17-year-old student from Hwa Chong Institution, Singapore. I really enjoy making friends and getting to know new people! Since young, I have always had a strong passion for Science. I am fascinated by its wide variety of applications in different aspects of human life, from improving individual standards of living, to solving global issues such as food shortage and pandemics!
My love for Science motivated me to embark on a few research projects in high school, tackling the serious problem of water pollution. I am really grateful for the opportunity to represent Singapore in SJWP 2021, and look forward to gaining exposure and knowledge about the brilliant world of Science and Research.
Tell us what the water concern in your country is!
Singapore's demand for clean water has steadily risen over the years. However, our lack of natural resources means we have to constantly explore new and innovative solutions to increase our water supply, so that we can fulfil the growing needs of our population.

Synthesis of an Eco-friendly and Reusable Magnetic Ferrofluid using Orange Peel Extract for Oil Spill Cleanup
Oil spills are environmental disasters, but current methods like in-situ burning are harmful to the marine ecosystem. This study proposes an innovative, low-cost ferrofluid developed using orange peel (OP) extract as the surfactant, instead of the conventional oleic acid which is expensive to purify. OP-ferrofluid has a higher oil removal capacity than commercial sorbents such as polypropylene and can be reused for at least 5 cycles without a significant drop in effectiveness. A novel prototype was constructed to easily retrieve used OP-ferrofluid via a magnet for regeneration, facilitating the use of OP-ferrofluid to clean up oil spills in the ocean.
