World Water Week and SIWI in 2025

World Water Week 2025 will take place 24 - 28 August. We caught up with acting Executive Director for SIWI, Caroline Andersson, to hear about the future for the event, and its host SIWI.

The dates for World Water Week 2025 have just been released, what can you say about the event?

World Water Week remains as a unique meeting place that unites research, industry, and civil society, contributing to knowledge and policy development in the fields of water and climate. As before, the event is centred around a specific theme, providing diverse perspectives on the critical role of water in solving global challenges. The theme for 2025 is Water for Climate Action.

If we don’t address water issues, we won’t be able to tackle the climate crisis. The theme for 2025 focuses on water-related climate challenges and will aim to put the opportunities and solutions that can make a difference for impactful climate action at the forefront.

We look forward to once again welcoming the world to Stockholm or to join us online. More information about World Water Week can be found on the event website.

SIWI is currently undergoing organizational changes, what does that mean?

A core part of SIWI’s operation has always been to create spaces and facilitate critical collaborations for the benefits of improved water governance. World Water Week is the prime example of this, but SIWI is engaged in many other forums too, such as being the host for the Water for Climate Pavilion during The United Nations Climate Change Conferences, COP, something which will happen again in just a few weeks’ time.

Going forward, these important contributions to the water world and beyond will be even more prominent in SIWI’s work, backed up by both internal and external expertise. This consolidation and increased focus will happen in close collaboration with key partners. Intense discussions about the exact format for this are ongoing. As many will already know, the future SIWI will be a smaller organization, but we believe that this will put us in a better place to remain relevant and focused in a continuously changing landscape.

SIWI has a partly new board, what does that mean for the organization?

In the transition phase that we are currently in, it is valuable to have added senior executive expertise to the board. This ensures that the right questions are asked and that this, already initiated, and quite challenging process can proceed as smoothly as possible.

It is also important to note that the current board works closely with global water expertise on the highest level to make sure that all relevant aspects of how to best serve the water community and the world at large are accounted for. This will pave the way for a new organizational structure fit for the future. SIWI will remain as an expert organization with a strong focus on creating important meeting places for water, working in collaboration with Stockholm Water Foundation and the City of Stockholm who will continue to award excellence within water, as hosts for the Stockholm Water Prize and Stockholm Junior Water Prize.
