Malin is  Advisor Water Climate and Environment. She joined SIWI in 2019, leading the working on the links between water, landscapes, biodiversity and climate change. Malin is the chief editor of the report “The essential drop to Net-Zero: Unpacking freshwater’s role in climate change mitigation” (see the report below)

Prior to joining SIWI, Malin was coordinating Agroforestry Network and the multidisciplinary research network Focali at Gothenburg University. She has also been working at FAO in Rome, Italy. Malin has focused her studies on biodiversity, nature resource management and sustainable development. She has field experience from lowland rainforest in Borneo, savannas of Southern and Eastern Africa and Swedish boreal landscapes.

She is a curious person with a taste for adventure, with excellent skills in verbal and written communication. Passionate about working towards a more sustainable human society, linking science, policy and local communities.

Sweden and Japan Join Forces on Water and Climate at High-Level Tokyo Seminar

On 16 May, SIWI, UNU, and the Embassy of Sweden to Japan co-hosted a high-level seminar in Tokyo on water’s role in climate action, with the presence of Their Majesties the King of Sweden and the Emperor of Japan. The high-level seminar in Tokyo highlighted how water can serve as a powerful enabler for climate action and sustainable development.

Inclusive and water-smart landscape restoration approaches for successful climate mitigation

Local solutions and climate action received great focus at COP28 in December last year. A range of actors brought ideas for how to best address the climate crisis. Many of these involved practical tools and methods for improved climate change mitigation and adaptation, as well as measures for enhanced resilience in local communities. One way of ensuring that climate action is long-term effective and successful for both humans and nature is to make it water-smart and inclusive.

Climate mitigation cannot succeed without water

On 9th of November, SIWI, together with GIZ, UNDP, SRC and PIK launched the landmark report “The Essential Drop to Reach Net Zero: Unpacking Freshwater’s Role in Climate Change Mitigation”. The global launch took place in the Water Pavilion inside the Blue Zone of COP27. It concluded over two years of work of over 40 scientists from 25 organizations and fills a vital knowledge gap to make sure that mitigation is not only climate smart, but also water wise.

Freshwater boundary no longer in safe zone

The planetary boundary for freshwater has been transgressed, according to researchers at Stockholm Resilience Centre, SRC. Their conclusion comes after having included, for the first time, “green water” in the assessment of the planetary boundary for freshwater.
