At the halfway point of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the world is significantly off track in meeting the Agenda's targets. Meeting Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6 “ensuring access to water and sanitation for all” is one of the globe’s biggest challenges, whilst also being an indispensable requirement to achieving global sustainable development.

The purpose of this paper is to begin exploring the use of the international instruments of the Global Biodiversity Framework and the Human Right to a Healthy Environment to strengthen nature-related actions to achieve Agenda 2030, as well as specifically the SDG’s based around the water sector.

The paper also seeks to lay the groundwork for identifying opportunities for water governance that can support the implementation of global goals, while underlining their importance and furthering the understanding of their connections.
