Study into gender mainstreaming in projects in the water sector in Mozambique

Water equality is a multi-dimensional concept with gender and social inclusion considered as one of the main dimensions. The review of the IWRM and WASH projects supported by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Mozambique identified several gender and responsive interventions with potential to make water equality a reality though gender mainstreaming and gender transformation.

The recommended core interventions could, on one hand, contribute to creating the environment that would strengthen the capacity of the institution through which they are promoting gender equality as well as guarantee the success of the interventions. The supportive interventions on the other hand would zoom into specific programming aspects and elevate the projects as best practices for subsequent phases of existing projects or future new projects. Above all, great attention should be paid on social gender norms as they are invisible barriers to gender transformation that require sensitization of stakeholders at all levels in both IWRM and WASH sectors.
