SIWI Insight Brief: 44th UN-Water Meeting, Rome

The meeting showed an expanding agenda of proposed initiatives, alongside calls for clearer coordination, financing and accountability. With the UN Water Conference 2026 approaching in December, attention is turning to how these proposals will work together and deliver results.

UN-Water established a task force on private-sector engagement, while discussions identified opportunities to integrate water into UN country planning. A proposed flagship initiative would connect water action across the UN conventions on climate change, biodiversity and desertification. Yet how Conference initiatives will be financed and their implementation tracked remains unclear.

Drawing on SIWI’s participation, the brief considers what these developments mean for water governance across the full hydrological cycle and for water’s place in the post-2030 development agenda. It looks ahead to opportunities to sustain progress through the 2027 SDG Summit, World Water Week 2027 and the 2028 UN Water Conference.
