A new generation of urban climate solutions

This side event to the UN 2023 Water Conference will showcase successful examples of improved urban water management from around the world. Drawing on new research, we will especially focus on solutions that make cities both water wise and climate smart.

Good governance and effective regulatory can have enormous positive effects on cities, helping them become more resilient. In this session, we will learn how cities around the world are working on both climate adaptation and mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions.

A new report, The essential drop to Net-Zero: Unpacking freshwater’s role in climate change mitigation, emphasizes the synergies between climate adaptation and mitigation. We will explore how cities can design strategies based on these new insights and in line with the best available scientific knowledge.

The discussion will also delve into the transformative role of young people as key stakeholders in mobilizing the progress towards achieving the SDG 6 (clean water and sanitation), SDG 13 (climate action), and SDG 11 (sustainable cities and communities). The event will offer a multi-level governance view on solutions to the fragmented nature of global water governance in ways that create synergies and avoid negative trade-offs.
