Investing in rain – pathways to a sustainable future
Linking rainfed agriculture to catchment management with emphasis on ecosystems and biodiversity preservation places a value on the service provided by improved farming methods, providing the potential to access multiple sources of finance.
SIWI, ZAMCOM, CIFOR-ICRAF, FANRPAN and other stakeholders are developing innovative methodologies across the Zambezi catchment to test various approaches to unlocking value, building an empirically based business case for investing in enhanced rainfed agriculture. Examples of this work will be presented, including soil moisture and solute measuring and monitoring, payment for ecosystem services, soil carbon sequestration credits, and microfinance and other types of financing instruments.
